Feeling overwhelmed?

Welcome to my blog! The plethora of complimentary healing and therapy options can be overwhelming. How do you decide what is right for you? How do you decide who is right for you? How do you know how best to compliment your particular issue, illness, or stressor? There are so many options it can be paralyzing.

Here are some guidelines to help you navigate the world of complimentary therapies and help you choose the best option for you.

What is complimentary therapy?

The most important distinction is between alternative therapies and complimentary therapies.

Complimentary therapies are used alongside conventional medical treatment. They can be a powerful boost to your treatment regime in reducing pain, relieving stress and anxiety, coping with side effects, improving sleep, mood, energy, and enhancing quality of life. These therapies include reiki, healing touch, reflexology, acupressure, herbal medicine, counselling, yoga, and support groups.

Alternative therapies are utilized instead of conventional medicine and include homeopathy, naturopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, and Ayurveda medicine. Complimentary therapies can also be utilized alongside alternative medicine practices.

How do I know which complimentary therapy is right for me?

It's important that you have goals in mind when choosing the best complementary therapy. For example, if you are undergoing cancer treatment, you may be interested in stress reduction and symptom management primarily. If you are healing from an injury, you may be looking to accelerate the healing process or reduce pain. If you are anxious and depressed you may be looking to relieve anxiety and improve your mood. Many primary care practitioners will recommend complimentary therapies and may help you to decide.

Word of mouth is always important. Talk to people who have similar health concerns and ask them about their experiences with various therapies and therapists. There is also trial and error: you may try some different therapies and decide which one(s) work best for you.

How do I know which therapist is right for me?

The most important part of any therapy is the therapist! This is a very personal experience and its important that you find the right "fit." You need to feel comfortable with the therapist and have confidence in their skills and abilities and more importantly you need to feel aligned with them. What is their philosophy of healing? What is the therapist's bias, belief system? Are they genuine and compassionate? Do you feel connected to him/her? Do they have time for your questions? Do they understand your needs and goals?

Ask them about their qualifications and training. Some therapists have multiple qualifications and highly specific backgrounds. Ask questions about their background and approach to therapy. Does it serve you to have a therapist with a traditional medical background for example. Talk to more than one therapist to find the best fit.

How do therapists determine their fees?

Therapists' fees have a wide range depending on the therapist's qualifications, experience and personal preference. Find the therapist you like and don't base your decision on their fees. Feel free to ask about their fees; some therapists who do energy work, for example, will tell you their fee is based on the value they place on their time rather than the energy work as the energy is universal. Some therapists will offer package options that allow you multiple sessions at reduced cost.

5 impressive reasons to choose Reiki

  1. Reiki is an ancient healing practice that originated in Japan. It combines universal wisdom (Re) with energy or (ki). It's one of the oldest, and possibly most trusted, of the energy healing modalities. It's many benefits have been well documented. it's a simple technique to learn and it is powerful. The recipient feels the benefits immediately.

  2. Everyone can benefit from Reiki treatments. There are so many ways that Reiki supports health and wellness that you do not have to have an illness to benefit from Reiki's stress reducing, calming, energizing, nurturing benefits.

  3. You do not have to be spiritual or religious to benefit from Reiki. Reiki utilizes universal energy that can be transferred to anyone through a trained therapist. You don't have to believe in or understand how the energy works to benefit from it.

The benefits to your wellbeing can be remarkable and may lead to other beneficial practices such as meditation, mindfulness practice, and a healthier lifestyle.
